Topic 1 – Knowing about and using the Standards
Effective implementation - How we make sure the Standards are known and used to help make sure students with disability are included in education in the same way as other students.
We want to hear your ideas about how we can help make sure students with disability can access and participate in education and training on the same basis as students without disability.
Your feedback will help improve the Disability Standards for Education.
This Ideas Wall covers the 3 topics of the 2025 review:
You can share your ideas on one, two or all of these topics. Your ideas will be anonymous. Please keep your comments respectful and focused on solutions.
Effective implementation - How we make sure the Standards are known and used to help make sure students with disability are included in education in the same way as other students.
How we make sure that students with disability, and their families and carers, are consulted and involved in the decisions being made about their education.
How we make sure students with disability able to access and participate in exams, work experience, and courses that include work placements.
The Australian Government is reviewing the Disability Standards for Education 2005 (the Standards). The law says the Standards must be reviewed every 5 years.
The Standards help to make sure students with disability can access and participate in education and training on the same basis as students without disability.
The Standards help to show what education providers must do to comply with the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (the Act).
The review asks whether the Standards are doing their job, and if not, how they can be improved.
The 2025 review will focus on 3 topics:
Effective implementation of the Standards: This means how well the Standards are used and followed.
Inclusive decision-making: This means how well students and their families and carers are supported to be involved in decisions.
Clear responsibilities for assessment authorities and course developers: This means making sure students with disability are able to access and participate in exams, work experience, and courses that include work placements on the same basis as other students.
Some of the areas the review is looking at build on recommendations from the Disability Royal Commission. There are also changes being considered in the review of the Act. Consultations for the review of the Act are happening separately.
